WATER GARDENING
Water gardens
are a very soothing part of the landscape. Properly installed, ponds
will give you years of
enjoyment.
People
make more out of water gardening than what is necessary. My biggest pet
peeve is man thinking he can do better than what God has perfected
thousands of years ago. With that being said, pay attention to the
photos below, and you will not see any man made contraptions to clutter
up these ponds. I will not give away any information on how we install
our ponds, but click on any information link, and we'll come out to
you. If you have an existing pond and want it transformed to one that
resembles one of these, we can do that too.

Installing
herbaceous plants around your water garden helps to make it look
natural. A stream feeds the water fall.
Water
falls are not needed to get the sound of water. In this
project, we made a water
sculpture
to fill the upper reservoir.
The water leaves the upper pond
and
falls into a steam that
follows the walkway and then
drops
into the lower pond. Once
again, putting plants that
naturally
grow near ponds and prairies
helps to give your pond a
natural
look. The picture below is a
close-up of the water
sculpture. In
this photo you can see the
fish through the clear water.
No man
made filters are used in
this feature, just natural
filtering
materials.
In this
project, we installed 2 sets of water falls, each falls
a minimum of 3' wide. In order to get the sound of water,
it's not the height of the falls that counts, it's the amount of water
falling over the rocks. In this job, we used 2 pumps that pump 2500
GPH. In the foreground of this pond, we installed a bog area to assist
in the filtering process. This pond was
recently installed at the time of the picture, so not all of the water
lilies are of any size yet. Notice the clarity of the water.
This picture is a

they look like in the winter.
(picture was
taken before the pond was complete)
This pond was redone to our
methods after
the customer was ready to fill it in. They had green water, string
algae, and water falls that did not work. We removed the old liner,
enlarged the pond to install a bog area, installed new water falls, and
installed aquatic plants. The landscaping around the pond was updated
to help set the pond. Clicking on the picture will show you the before
picture. Not an uncommon situation that we run into.
This job involved making a stream that was
12' long and then dropping into the pond. The pond follows the contour
of the walkway. The 2 chairs in the background are for watching the
pond while the homeowner removes his shoes before going into the house.
The water flow from this pump allows the sound of the water falls to
heard inside in home office.

In the photo
below, we took 2 existing ponds and made them one. We installed a small
spill way to let the higher pond spill into the lower pond. And then we
used that feature to make a stone bridge go over top of the spillway. A
new water fall was also installed to give a focal point to the water
garden. By clicking on the picture you will be able to see this pond
from the other side. Notice how plants are used both inside and outside
the pond can create the atmosphere you want.
This is a
close-up of water falls
that are 6' wide. With using prefabricated water falls or waterfall
boxes, this effect can not be accomplished. Once again, it's the
size of the pump that creates the water sounds that people crave. This
pump is 4000GPH.

This
project required a water fall that would go over the top of a train
tunnel, but also leave an opening for the customer to see the trains go
through. The water falls ended up being 3' high, and had to push the
water 4" away from the tunnel. Once the water fell into the reservoir,
it goes about 30' into the main pond. The length of the stream allows
the train to cross over it three times.
Ponds don't have
to be large to be effective. This one is only 4' x 6'. It has all the
features everyone craves in a water garden:
lilies, fish, and water falls.
