PAVER PATIOS
Before, the
steps came straight out of the second story back door, and
ended nearly at the property line. There is also a door at ground level.
They wanted to have usable space, a patio and a water
feature.

There is now a walkway to the lower
level door. A small wood deck was
put on the steps
to give a small
landing area, that allowed
us to
move the steps to
follow the house
and give easier access to the patio
A circular patio was decided upon
along with an accompanying knee
wall. The end of the patio needed to
be raised 18" due to the grade. A
pillar was used to start the wall by
the planting bed, and low voltage
lights were installed on the wall to
to light up the night. The walkway
also allows the customer to stop and
enjoy the water feature.

This project
evolved removing an existing patio, cutting off a 4' long slab of
concrete from the screened in porch, adding walls around window wells
to help to take away from their unsatisfying appearance. Walls around
the air conditioner were requested to help muffle the noise and to
conceal it, and to replace a worn out gas grill with a new grilling
area. The concrete slab was removed so that the new pavers could go up
to the doors. A fire pit or burning place was requested, and enough
paved space for their family of 8.
From this
angle you can see the back
of the fire ring, and how the patio
encompasses the entire back of the
house. There is now enough room
for 2 tables. The back side of
the
grilling area is also visible.
.
From this
angle you can see the 2 levels of this
patio. You will also notice the carriage lights on
top of all the pillars, what is not that visible are
the lights mounted on the walls. (click on picture
to right and below to see it lit up at night) The
pavers now go up to screen porch.
The picture
below is a panoramic view of the
patio. All areas are visible, the grilling area is
to the right, the fireplace area to the front, and
the family area to the right.

This
was an unusual project in that this customer needed a place for their
dogs to go out, and a pond for their pet turtles. There was nothing
off the back of the house, so steps had to be
made. They were also looking for a patio area that would be small
enough for them to use, but also expandable so they could entertain
company. Some privacy was also requested from their neighbors back
door, so a small section of fence was put above the knee wall. The knee
wall was built to a height of 30" to keep the dogs from jumping over
the wall. An arbor was put on to help define the room, as well
give some protection from the afternoon sun. Double wooden gates were
custom made to allow for easy access to the extra patio space, and a
single gate was added to the side to allow access to the front yard.

Here
is an inside view of the patio. Close to the gate on the right side you
will see the small turtle pond. This extra space will also be for
planting some annuals for color, and for the barbecue grill.
To the left of the gates is the grass space devoted to the dogs. In the
foreground are the new steps leading to the sliding glass door. Tumbled
pavers were used to match the wall stone and the stones for the steps.

This
customer had
recently purchased this house and was wanting a patio off of the
sun room. They also needed something to keep the sun out of the
sun room in the mid afternoon, because it heated the room up too much.
They had existing orange clay brick they wanted to reuse from a walkway
that went from the driveway to the sun room.

In this after photo you see the
arbor that was built and the
lattice
over the paved areas. This acts
as
an extension of the sun room.
The
tarped area of the
arbor was left
open to keep a hole to
the sky.
The raised area was put in to
allow
for a small covered area for
morning coffee, and also acts
as a
stoop for the sun room.
The orange pavers were
reused
from the original walk
and are the
unifying element from the house
and garage. They were cut to fit
around the new circular patio.

What
now is their back
door, was their garage doors.
The old driveway was removed and all that remained
was a 12" drop off from the original concrete slab. The
remodel made the new floor level 18" higher than the
original grade. The customer was wanting a
Mediterranean feel. Steps were also needed for the
patio. An arbor was requested, as well as knee walls
to help give it a feeling of space.

As probably
noted, the arbor is not
there, as it will be
added at a future date. The pillars on the knee walls are
hollow and will allow for the posts to be installed. The
steps leading out of the house also doubles as planters.
In the picture to the side, plantings help to give a
Mediterranean atmosphere. The walkway leads to the
kid's playroom and also gives the children a small patio
of their own. One item that can not be seen is
a grilling
area. It is on the opposite
side of the far right pillar next
to the house. 2 different style
of pavers were used in this
project, one for the patio and
one for the walkway. The
colors were the same because
they were both from the
same manufacturer.

The
deck
that was on the back of this was over 20 years old and ready
to be replaced. The deck was on 2 levels with
a hot tub in the lower area.
There was also a post supporting the upper
balcony. A room addition was
recently put on which partially removed the
deck.
The new
patio partially resembled the
old
deck. In the patio, the post was kept out-
side and knee walls were used to separate
the 2 levels. The lower level was raised 3'.
The seating walls
in this patio served to
separate the
2
levels, lights were also attached for the patio.
The hot
tub was reused and a seating area was put
in
behind the tub. Steps were put in to get you to the
hot
tub. 2 sets of steps were installed to get you to
the
lower level, and 1 set gets you to the yard.

This
is the view from the new kitchen
door looking towards
the yard. The gold dots in this
photo are the low voltage
lights. The steps are also in
view to the hot tub. The paved
surface in the foreground is
the barbecuing area. The shed
to the right is a permanent
structure that could not be
moved.

This
patio had to be
made narrow due to no build lines. The maximum width on this was 12',
so we wrapped it around the corner of the house. (click on picture to
see better view) Each side of the knee walls have pillars and all walls
have lights installed on them. Carriage lights were also installed on
each pillar. The steps were made out of the same material as the walls.
On the far wall, a planter bed was left between the patio and wall.

With
this project, we were asked to
enlarge this
patio and to find a way to
block the hot afternoon
sun. Since the existing patio
was over 8 years old,
we out it on a separate level
and used a different
style of paver. A knee wall was
also used to give it
a feeling of space. To help get
the sun off the patio,
an arbor was installed with
lattice on top create
more shade.

Who says you
can't do a lot in a small
space,
especially to a
head strong Pug! After this patio
was installed she
took it over as hers. To help
give additional planting space, a circular
patio was
used. A mixture of perennials and blooming shrubs
were used. This customer was wanting a place to
come home to and relax. This picture was taken in
late spring.

This patio courtyard area is
shared by a mother and daughter. 2
separate patios were needed, but keep them connected to have access to
each other. The daughter wanted a pond, but the mother did not want to
see it, so plantings had to be used to conceal it from view. The tricky
part of this project was to please both tastes and keep it affordable.
